Visiting the Fischer Factory in Germany – A Behind-the-Scenes Look at German Craftsmanship

The Fischer factory in Drebach, Germany.
In May 2026, Nicola and I had the pleasure of visiting Germany to spend time with the Fischer team, manufacturers of the premium German-made weather instruments that we have proudly distributed throughout Australia and New Zealand since 2009 through Barometers & Clocks.
Our journey began in Dresden, where we were warmly welcomed by Fischer CEO Christoph , who kindly collected us from the airport and took us to our accommodation. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality shown by Christoph, Peter and the entire Fischer team was exceptional.
Later that afternoon, we met up with Peter and visited a local museum before enjoying dinner together. It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up, discuss the future of the business, and strengthen a relationship that has grown over more than 17 years.
Exploring the Region
Before visiting the factory, we spent a couple of days exploring the beautiful Saxony region surrounding Dresden and Drebach. The area is rich in history, culture and traditional German craftsmanship, making it the perfect home for a company such as Fischer.
Arriving at the Factory
Walking into the Fischer factory was a special moment. While we work with Fischer products every day, seeing where they are designed, assembled, tested and shipped gave us a much deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind every instrument.
The factory combines modern manufacturing with traditional hands-on skills that have been passed down through generations.

Meeting the People Behind the Products
Privacy Note: During our visit we met many talented members of the Fischer team and greatly appreciated the time they spent sharing their knowledge with us. To respect employee privacy, this article focuses on the factory, products, historical displays and management team rather than individual staff members.
One of the highlights of our visit was meeting many of the staff responsible for producing the instruments we supply throughout Australasia.
It was fascinating to see the various production stages and learn how individual components are assembled into the finished barometers, tide clocks, thermometers, hygrometers and weather stations that our customers know and trust.
The pride the staff take in their work was obvious, and it was clear that quality remains at the heart of everything Fischer does.
Seeing Traditional Craftsmanship in Action
During our tour, we visited several production areas and gained insight into how the instruments are manufactured and tested.
We watched the production of bezels and components used across the Fischer and Barigo ranges, learned how hygrometers are calibrated and tested for humidity accuracy, and saw the assembly processes used for barometers and tide clocks.

Learning about the production and preparation of instrument dials used throughout the Fischer range.
One particularly interesting area was the woodworking department. Hanging on the walls were dozens of wooden templates and sample patterns representing many years of product development and design changes. These templates provide a fascinating record of how certain instrument cases and styles have evolved over time while maintaining their traditional appearance.

Historic wooden templates and patterns used during the development of many Fischer instrument designs.
The fact that these templates have been preserved over the years demonstrates Fischer’s respect for its history and commitment to traditional craftsmanship.
A Rich Company History
Another highlight was the display area in the foyer, which documents the long history of the Fischer company.
Historic photographs, milestones, family involvement and factory developments tell the story of a business that has survived changing times while maintaining its commitment to quality German manufacturing.

Seeing this history displayed so proudly helped us understand why Fischer instruments have earned such a respected reputation worldwide.
Why We Choose Fischer
After visiting the factory and seeing the manufacturing process first-hand, it is easy to understand why Fischer has earned a worldwide reputation for producing high-quality German-made barometers, tide clocks, weather stations, hygrometers and thermometers.
Every instrument reflects decades of experience, careful craftsmanship and rigorous testing. Whether you are looking for a marine barometer, a traditional weather station or a precision hygrometer, Fischer and Barigo continue to set the standard for premium weather instruments.
Looking Towards the Future
We also spent time discussing future opportunities and product developments, including the expanding Barigo range now being produced under Fischer ownership.
It was encouraging to see the continued investment being made in both Fischer and Barigo products, ensuring these traditional instruments remain available for future generations.
We left Germany with renewed confidence in the brands we represent and a greater appreciation for the people who make them possible.
Thank You
Nicola and I would like to sincerely thank Christoph, Peter and everyone at Fischer for their generous hospitality and for taking the time to share their knowledge and passion with us.
Visits like these remind us that behind every barometer, tide clock, weather station and hygrometer is a team of skilled people dedicated to producing instruments of exceptional quality.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with Fischer and Barigo for many years to come.
