Kurt Fischer, an aircraft engineer, founded the Fischer factory in Drebach, in Germany's Ore Mountains, in October 1945. The first barometers left the workshop within a year, built in the classic round dial, brass and timber style that's still recognisable as "antique" today, because it's the same style that defined the era.
The company stayed in Drebach through decades of change, including a period of state ownership, before returning fully to Fischer family hands in 1990. Its instruments are still hand-assembled by people trained in the same techniques the factory started with, which is why a new Fischer barometer looks and feels like it belongs in a much older house.
